Episode 765
Spiritual Sobriety: Choosing Presence Over Passive Living | Ep 765
Greetings, good people! Welcome to the "Daily Bible Refresh," brought to you by Voice of God Daily. I am your host, Rev. Dr. Brad Miller. In each episode, we aim to offer a fresh perspective on scripture readings by making the Bible understandable, relatable, and applicable to your daily life. Today, we’re diving into Ephesians 5:15-20 from The Message version, providing insightful reflections, and ending with an action point to apply the day's teaching to your life — all in under ten minutes.
1. Live Mindfully in an Unconscious World
One key takeaway from today's reading is the call to live mindfully. Ephesians 5:15-20 urges us to "watch our step" and "use our head," emphasizing the importance of being consciously aware rather than sleepwalking through life. In today’s world, it's easy to get caught up in the rat race, accepting the status quo without much thought. This passage challenges us to be alert and critically aware of our surroundings, urging us to be thoughtfully engaged citizens who question societal norms and address social injustices, environmental concerns, and systemic inequalities.
2. Embrace Transformative Community
The scripture speaks of moving from darkness to light, a transformation that is not about judgment but about community and awareness. Christianity encourages us to move from isolation to community, from ignorance to awareness, and from apathy to engagement. The emphasis on singing together represents the essence of sharing a community vibe, highlighting that spiritual growth is both an individual and a communal experience. When our voices blend together, it creates a collaborative spiritual journey that strengthens our collective purpose.
3. Choose Spiritual Sobriety and Conscious Living
Ephesians addresses the contrast between wine and the Spirit, suggesting the importance of choosing consciousness over numbness. In our modern lives, it's easy to "check out" with mindless activities like endless scrolling on social media or engaging in busy work. This passage invites us to be fully aware and alive in the moment, to engage actively in our roles in creating positive change. The action step for today is to identify one area in your life where you may be 'sleeping,' such as excessive consumption of media, and instead, spend 15 minutes researching an area of injustice or engaging in a meaningful conversation to spark change.
Closing Prayer and Resources
We conclude today with a prayer asking the Divine to awaken us to our world’s realities and our roles within it. Plus, we're offering a free resource to aid in your Bible study: the ABC 123 Bible Study Guide, available in our show notes at voiceofgoddaily.com.
Thank you for joining me, Rev. Dr. Brad Miller, on this journey. I'll be back tomorrow morning, bright and early, with another refreshing take on scripture. Remember, God's loyal love doesn’t run out; His merciful love is renewed every morning. See you tomorrow!

Hello, good people, and welcome to daily bible
Speaker:refresh brought to you by voice of God daily. I am
Speaker:doctor Brad Miller and here to bring you the daily bible refresh where
Speaker:we look to offer a fresh perspective of a daily
Speaker:reading of the scriptures. We read from the revised
Speaker:common lectionary. Year c is where we're at right
Speaker:now. Year c, we're in the epiphany season. We like to
Speaker:make the Bible understandable, relatable, and applicable.
Speaker:Understandable by reading from the new testament version, a reading for
Speaker:this day only from the message version of the Bible,
Speaker:relatable in as in as much as we give you a couple of points to
Speaker:ponder, to think about from the scripture, and applicable in as
Speaker:much as we give you a action point,
Speaker:something that you can apply to your life. We have a prayer and we
Speaker:do all of this in less than 10 minutes. Our re
Speaker:reading for the day is from Ephesians
Speaker:5:15 through 20, reading from the message.
Speaker:Don't waste your time on useless work,
Speaker:mere busy work, the barren pursuits of
Speaker:darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are.
Speaker:It's a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do
Speaker:in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those
Speaker:frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ.
Speaker:Wake up from your sleep. Climb out of your coffins. Christ
Speaker:will show you the light. So watch your step.
Speaker:Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get.
Speaker:These are desperate times. Don't live carelessly,
Speaker:unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the
Speaker:master wants. Don't drink too much wine that
Speaker:cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God,
Speaker:huge drafts of Him. Sing
Speaker:hymns instead of drinking songs. Sing songs from your heart
Speaker:of Christ. Sing praises over everything,
Speaker:any excuse for a song to God the Father, in the name of our
Speaker:master, Jesus Christ.
Speaker:Wonderful reading of scripture from Ephesians. It's about living mindfully.
Speaker:It's about, living with intention. It's about being
Speaker:aware. It's about being waking up, being being alert about the
Speaker:reality of the meaningfulness of the world around us. Let
Speaker:me give you a couple of points to ponder. One of them, it has to
Speaker:do with the conscious being a conscious person
Speaker:living in an unconscious world. Remember how
Speaker:this passage starts? It starts with watch your step and
Speaker:use your head. In a modern context, we
Speaker:might say this speaks to the importance of being alert, of being critically
Speaker:aware of the systems and structures around us rather
Speaker:than sleepwalking through life accepting
Speaker:everything at face value. We're called to be thoughtfully
Speaker:engaged persons, engaged citizens if you
Speaker:if you will, who examine and question the status
Speaker:quo. We are all about having an
Speaker:awareness that social injustice does exist in the world.
Speaker:There are environmental concerns which are real and there
Speaker:are systematic in inequalities in our world
Speaker:which need to be addressed, and we are called to do something about
Speaker:those things. Another point, it's about
Speaker:transformative community. The text here from Ephesians
Speaker:speaks of moving from darkness to light. So that's not
Speaker:about judgment, but that is really about transformation.
Speaker:In Christianity, this can be understood as moving from isolation
Speaker:to community, from ignorance to awareness, from
Speaker:apathy to engagement. The emphasis on singing
Speaker:together. Ain't that cool? That part there. It's about sharing a
Speaker:community vibe, if you will, and suggest that spiritual growth
Speaker:spiritual growth isn't just an individual thing, it's a
Speaker:communal thing. It is where our voices blend together. It is
Speaker:collaborative. One more point, spiritual
Speaker:sobriety and mindful living. It's interesting
Speaker:how the writer of Ephesians talks about wine here. The contrast
Speaker:between wine and the spirit isn't about a strict prohibition,
Speaker:but about choosing consciousness over numbness.
Speaker:In our modern world we often sometimes people talk about, you know,
Speaker:checking out, whether that's through substance abuse
Speaker:or maybe endlessly and mindlessly scrolling on your phone
Speaker:or a consumer culture kind of a thing,
Speaker:or just busy, busy, busy, busy, busy work and not really getting
Speaker:anywhere. The text from Ephesians here today invites us to
Speaker:choose a presence, being engaged,
Speaker:being fully aware and alive in the moment, and our
Speaker:and understanding our role in creating
Speaker:positive change. Here's your action step for the day.
Speaker:Identify one sleeping area
Speaker:of your life. Perhaps it's just mildly
Speaker:consuming something. Maybe it's overeating or over drinking or
Speaker:overdoing television or Internet stuff.
Speaker:It is about also examining your life.
Speaker:Do not be passive with your life about
Speaker:those personal things or do not be passive
Speaker:about accepting injustice in our world. So choose
Speaker:to wake up. Spend a few
Speaker:minutes, maybe 15 minutes researching some area
Speaker:of injustice or some area where you know these things are just not
Speaker:right. Maybe you wanna write something in a journal, record something about it,
Speaker:or maybe have a meaningful conversation with someone about what you can do
Speaker:where you wake up from a slumber and
Speaker:do something about some area, which
Speaker:actually you can do something about.
Speaker:Before we have our closing prayer, I wanna remind you to lift up that we
Speaker:have a resource for you, a free resource that you
Speaker:that can help you with your bible study. I just know that I can. I
Speaker:put this together a couple years ago. It's the ABC 123
Speaker:Bible study guide and what it does, it simply makes by reading the
Speaker:Bible and studying the Bible as easy as ABC
Speaker:123. You can find it at our show notes at voiceofgoddaily.com.
Speaker:It's our free gift to you for the daily
Speaker:Bible refresh. Let's pray. Divine
Speaker:God, Spirit of love and justice, wake us up to the reality of our
Speaker:world and our role within it. Help us to move
Speaker:beyond any busyness to meaningful action, beyond
Speaker:unconscious living to purposeful engagement. Give us
Speaker:courage to examine our lives, wisdom to choose consciousness
Speaker:over comfort, and strength to work for positive change.
Speaker:May we sing songs of justice and hope,
Speaker:not just with our voices, but with our lives, in a
Speaker:spirit of love and community. Amen. Well, it's
Speaker:been great to be with you. My name is doctor Brad Miller, and you've been
Speaker:listening to the daily Bible refresh.
Speaker:Remember, I'll be with you again tomorrow morning, bright and early, so I hope that
Speaker:you'll join me. Until then, remember that God's loyal
Speaker:love doesn't run out. His merciful
Speaker:love hasn't dried up. It's created
Speaker:new every morning.
