Episode 778
From Tribalism to Unity: Paul's Message to the 21st Century Church | Ep 778
Welcome back, good people, to another enriching episode of "Daily Bible Refresh with Dr. Brad Miller," a production of VoiceOfGodDaily.com.
Today, we're diving deep into the exploration of 1 Corinthians 1:3-17, as Rev. Dr. Brad Miller takes us through a heartfelt and compelling journey centered around unity, collective grace, and transformative leadership within our faith communities.
Today's reading from The Message translation offers a vivid and modern interpretation of Paul's epistle addressing the early Christian church's divisions. Dr. Brad highlights the eternal relevance of Paul's message and its profound implications on our contemporary religious landscape. Our examination today is marked by three crucial points, each serving as a beacon guiding us towards a more unified and collaborative Christian journey.
Key Takeaway Points:
- Dismantling Tribalism: Dr. Brad underscores the timeless challenge of tribalism within religious communities. Paul criticized the early factions among the followers of different church leaders, emphasizing that true unity in faith transcends these divisions. Dr. Brad urges us to dismantle our modern-day denominational and theological silos that often mask deeper power struggles, emphasizing that a unified faith is not about uniformity but mutual respect and a common purpose in Christ’s mission of justice and healing.
- Embracing Collective Grace: One of the more thought-provoking points reiterated by Dr. Brad is the idea that spiritual gifts are communal resources, not personal possessions. Paul’s assertion that “you don’t need a thing; you’ve got it all” encourages us to view our spiritual abundance as something that grows through sharing, challenging the individualistic and consumerist tendencies prevalent both then and now. We are called to nurture a collective spirituality that prioritizes communal well-being over individual gain.
- Decolonizing Leadership: In a critical reflection on leadership, Dr. Brad discusses Paul’s rejection of creating personal followings. Paul’s insistence on focusing followers’ devotion to Christ, rather than himself, invites us to rethink hierarchical religious structures. True spiritual leadership, as Dr. Brad articulates, empowers and uplifts others, rather than dominating or accruing personal power. This reflection encourages us to foster leadership that is inclusive, egalitarian, and deeply rooted in love and service.
To wrap up the session, Dr. Brad offers a practical action step: creating an interfaith justice circle. Reach out to those from different faith traditions or denominations who share a commitment to social justice. This initiative aims to find common ground and plan collective actions that bring healing and unity in your community, highlighting shared values over theological differences.
The episode concludes with a poignant prayer, asking God to help us move beyond tribalism and embrace our diversity, seeking wisdom in our differences and strength in unity. As always, Dr. Brad invites you to join him daily for these refreshing insights. Hello, good people. Welcome to daily bible
Speaker:refresh with doctor Brad Miller. We come to you from
Speaker:voice of god daily dot com.
Speaker:This is a daily reading of the bible. We take the
Speaker:bible selected verse for this year for the revised
Speaker:comma lectionary, wherein year c, the epiphany season,
Speaker:we offer you a bible study reading that we believe is
Speaker:refreshed because it is understandable, relatable,
Speaker:and applicable to your life.
Speaker:We make it understandable by reading from the from the revised
Speaker:standard from the revised common lectionary, then we also
Speaker:read the message translation of the bible, the new testament
Speaker:reading only. We make it relatable by offering you a
Speaker:couple of points to ponder, things to think about regarding the scripture.
Speaker:And applicable, I give you an action step. We have a prayer. We do
Speaker:all that in less than 10 minutes. Our reading for the day
Speaker:is from 1st Corinthians 1 3 through
Speaker:17, reading from the message. May all the
Speaker:gifts and benefits that come from God, our father, and the master,
Speaker:Jesus Christ, be yours. Every time I think of you, and
Speaker:I think of you often, I thank God for your lives of
Speaker:free and open access to God given by Jesus.
Speaker:There's no end to what has happened in you. It's
Speaker:beyond speech, beyond knowledge. The evidence of
Speaker:Christ has been clearly verified in your lives.
Speaker:Just think, you don't need a thing. You've got it all. All
Speaker:God's gifts are right in front of you as you wait
Speaker:expectantly for our master, Jesus, to arrive on the scene for
Speaker:the finale. And not only that, but God himself
Speaker:is right alongside to keep you steady and on
Speaker:track until things are all wrapped up by Jesus.
Speaker:God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us
Speaker:the life of his son and our master, Jesus.
Speaker:He will never give up on you. Never forget that.
Speaker:The cross, the irony of God's wisdom.
Speaker:I have a serious concern to bring up with you, my friends, using the authority
Speaker:of Jesus, our master, I'll put it, as urgently as I can. You must
Speaker:get along with each other. You must learn to be considerate
Speaker:of one another, cultivating a life which is
Speaker:uncommon. I break this up because some
Speaker:of Chloe's family brought a most disturbing report to my
Speaker:attention that you're fighting among yourselves.
Speaker:I'll tell you exactly what I was told. You're all picking sides
Speaker:going around saying I'm on Paul's side or I'm on Apollo's
Speaker:or I'm or Peter's my man or I'm in the messiah group.
Speaker:And I ask you, has the messiah been chopped up in
Speaker:little pieces so we can each have a relic all our
Speaker:own? Was Paul crucified for you? Was a
Speaker:single one of you baptized in Paul's name? I
Speaker:was not involved with any of your baptisms except for Christmas
Speaker:and Gaius. And on getting this report, I'm sure glad I
Speaker:wasn't. At least no one could go around saying he was baptized in my
Speaker:name. Come to think of it, I also baptized Stephane's
Speaker:family. But as far as I can recall, that's it.
Speaker:God didn't send me out to collect a following for myself,
Speaker:but to preach the message of what he has done,
Speaker:collecting a following for him. And he didn't send me to do it
Speaker:with a lot of fancy rhetoric of my own, lest the powerful
Speaker:action at the center, Christ on the cross, be trivialized
Speaker:into mere words. What we're talking
Speaker:about here, my good friends, is about tribalism.
Speaker:And Paul is speaking to that here in this passage
Speaker:of scripture. And I want to speak to you about it for a minute because
Speaker:this passage goes beyond tribalism into
Speaker:seeking unity in God's love. And
Speaker:Paul is directly addressing this division
Speaker:and calling for unity. And this happened in the early church
Speaker:just as as much as it happens in the church in the
Speaker:21st century. There's a few points to ponder.
Speaker:One of them has to be with dismantling
Speaker:tribalism. Paul's criticism
Speaker:of factions within the church of different leaders speaks powerfully
Speaker:to our modern religious divisions.
Speaker:Progressive Christianity recognizes that denomination, own theological, and
Speaker:political tribalism often mask power
Speaker:struggles that detract from a work of justice and
Speaker:healing. And true unity doesn't require
Speaker:uniformity, but rather mutual respect
Speaker:and a common purpose. Another
Speaker:point is collective grace.
Speaker:This passage of scripture emphasizes that spiritual gifts aren't
Speaker:personal possessions, but communal resources.
Speaker:It says you don't need a thing, you've got it all, which suggests
Speaker:an abundance that comes through sharing rather than individual accumulation.
Speaker:And this challenges both religious consumerism
Speaker:and spiritual individualism, which was prevalent
Speaker:in the 1st century church and indeed is
Speaker:prevalent in our contemporary faith communities.
Speaker:One more point is the decolonizing of leadership.
Speaker:Paul's rejection of baptizing in his name, Paul's name,
Speaker:and collecting personal followers for Paul, not Jesus, challenges
Speaker:a hierarchical religious leadership. This invited us invites
Speaker:us to examine how religious authority
Speaker:can either perpetuate or dismantle systems
Speaker:of power and privilege. True spiritual leadership
Speaker:empowers rather than dominates.
Speaker:Here's your action step. I wanna invite you to think about creating a
Speaker:interfaith justice circle. That is reach out to people who are a
Speaker:little different than you, from different faith traditions or
Speaker:denominations or have
Speaker:some differences about their outlook on things, but share a
Speaker:common commitment to social justice.
Speaker:And I just invite you to meet some other people, meet virtually or in person,
Speaker:identify the common ground that you have and plan something you
Speaker:can do together, some concrete action or community healing.
Speaker:Focus on what unites your values rather than
Speaker:theological differences. We're gonna have a prayer in
Speaker:just a moment. Do wanna remind remind you that we have a great resource for
Speaker:you that's gonna help you with your individual Bible study.

Speaker:that we often have set for ourselves and separate ourselves from each
Speaker:other, and free us from the need to be right at the expense of
Speaker:being loving. Guide us in using our gifts not for personal
Speaker:gain, but for collective liberation and healing.
Speaker:When we're attempted to create new hierarchies, remind us of
Speaker:your leveling love. May we find strength in
Speaker:our device in our diversity, wisdom in our
