Hello good people and welcome to Daily Bible Refresh with Dr. Brad Miller. This is the podcast where we take the Revised Common Lectionary. We're in Year C.
This is the third Sunday of Epiphany and we have a daily Bible reading from the New Testament which is both understandable, relatable and applicable to your life. We make it understandable by reading the New Testament lesson only from the message translation of the Bible. Relatable.
We give you a couple of points to ponder and applicable. Then we give you an action step to follow to all the follow up in the reading of the Scripture. We have a prayer. We do it all in under 10 minutes.
Today's reading is from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 4, verses 14 through 21. Reading from the message to set the Burden Free Jesus returned to Galilee, powerful in the spirit.
News that he was back spread through the countryside. He taught in their meeting places to everyone's acclaim and pleasure. He came to Nazareth where he had been raised as he always did on the Sabbath.
He went to the meeting place. When he stood up to read, he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isai.
Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written God's spirit is on me.
He's chosen me to preach the message of good news to the poor, sent me to announce pardon to prisoners and a recovery of sight to the blind to set the burden and the battered free to announce this is God's time to shine. He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the assistant and sat down. Every eye in the place was on him. Intent. He started in.
You've just heard the Scripture. Make history. It came true just now in this place. A powerful reading of Scripture, all about setting the burden free.
So let's reflect for a minute about Luke 4:14 21. It's a pivotal point in Jesus's ministry when he essentially announces his mission statement in his hometown.
In his hometown synagogue, there's a couple of points to ponder. Jesus proclaims economic justice the first thing Jesus emphasizes is good news for the poor.
In our modern context, this challenges us to examine systems of economic inequality and our role in either perpetuating or dismantling them. Jesus's message wasn't just spiritual comfort. It was a radical call for societal transformation.
Another point, a point about liberation as a central aspect of faith. When Jesus talks about setting prisoners free and liberating the oppressed, he's establishing liberation as a core to his ministry.
This isn't just about spiritual salvation, but about real world freedom from oppression discrimination, injustice. Today he calls on all of us, you and I, to be active participants in movements for justice and human rights. One more point.
Sacred timing and present reality. Jesus boldly declares this is God's time to shine that the Scripture is being fulfilled, filled in their presence.
This reminds us that divine action isn't just historical or future oriented. It's happening right now through us as we work for justice and healing in our world. Here's your action step.
This week I just invite you to identify a system of oppression in your own life, in your own community. It might be homelessness or food insecurity or discrimination and take some concrete step to address it.
It might mean contacting a governmental representative representative or volunteering with a community organization or maybe just simply educating yourself about places where there's local injustices and initiatives that are taken to address those for to pray just a moment but I did want you to know about a resources that that we have for you.
