Remember… “All scripture is God-breathed and useful”(2 Timothy 3:16)

The discourse surrounding Luke 19:28-40 presents a multifaceted examination of Jesus's entrance into Jerusalem, encapsulating themes of prophetic witness, collective joy, and the transformative power of humble resistance. This episode elucidates how Jesus's choice of a colt, rather than a war horse, serves as a profound critique of the prevailing power dynamics of his time, positioning him as a radical figure advocating for an alternative vision of leadership. The act of riding into the city was not merely a spiritual assertion; it was a deliberate political statement that challenged the norms of authority characterized by violence and domination.

Listeners are invited to engage with the notion that this act of peaceful protest holds significant implications for contemporary movements against oppression. The episode underscores the importance of collective joy as a form of resistance, suggesting that shared celebration can disrupt the status quo and inspire hope for a more equitable future. The enthusiastic praise of the crowd becomes a powerful symbol of communal resilience and a challenge to those in power who seek to silence dissent. Through this lens, the episode calls upon individuals to reflect on their roles within their communities and the potential for joyous protest as a means of effecting change.

In concluding the discussion, the podcast provides listeners with actionable steps to respond to systems of oppression in their own lives, reinforcing the idea that spirituality and activism are inextricably linked. This practical approach encourages individuals to embody the principles espoused by Jesus, combining prayer with purposeful action. The episode thus serves not only as a theological exploration but also as a rallying cry for those seeking to engage in meaningful activism rooted in joy and community.

Speaker A:

reading for the day from Luke:

Speaker A:

When he got near Bethpage and Bethany at the mountain called Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions.

Speaker A:

Go to the village across from you.

Speaker A:

As you enter you will find a coat tethered one who has never been ridden.

Speaker A:

Untie it and bring it.

Speaker A:

If anyone says anything, ask what are you doing?

Speaker A:

Say his master needs him.

Speaker A:

The two left and found it just as he had said.

Speaker A:

As they were untying the cold, its owner said, what are you doing?

Speaker A:

Untying the colt.

Speaker A:

And they said, the master needs him.

Speaker A:

They brought the colt to Jesus.

Speaker A:

Then, throwing the coats on its back, they helped Jesus get on.

Speaker A:

As he rode, the people gave him a grand welcome, throwing their coats in the streets.

Speaker A:

And right at the crest where the Mount of Olives begins its descent, the whole crowd of disciples burst into enthusiastic praise over all the mighty works they had witnessed.

Speaker A:

Blessed is he who comes in the King in God's name.

Speaker A:

All's well in heaven, glory in the high places.

Speaker A:

Some Pharisees from the crowd told him, teacher, get your disciples under control.

Speaker A:

But he said if they keep quiet, the stones would do it for them.

Speaker A:

Shouting praise.

Speaker A:

Wow.

Speaker A:

This is Luke's account of Jesus's entry into Jerusalem on this day, Palm Sunday, a story that challenges our understanding of power and protest and prophetic witness.

Speaker A:

Let's take a look at some points to ponder.

Speaker A:

There's the counter cultural protest.

Speaker A:

Jesus's interest into Jerusalem wasn't just a spiritual movement.

Speaker A:

It was a political theater by choosing a humble colt instead of a war horse, Jesus staged a powerful critique of imperial power.

Speaker A:

The peaceful protests mocked the violent triumphal entries of Roman rulers while demonstrating an alternative form of leadership based on humility and service.

Speaker A:

In our time, this calls us to consider how we might create creatively challenge systems of oppression.

Speaker A:

Second point is the power of collective joy.

Speaker A:

This somehow spontaneous outbreak of praise from the crowd shows us how shared celebration can be an act of resistance.

Speaker A:

When the disciples burst into enthusiastic praise, they weren't just being religious.

Speaker A:

They were participating in a community expression of hope for a divine kind of world.

Speaker A:

Their joy threatened the authorities precisely because it imagined possibilities beyond the status quo.

Speaker A:

A third point is creation's revolutionary voice.

Speaker A:

When religious authorities demand silence, Jesus responds that stones would do it for them.

Speaker A:

Shouting praise.

Speaker A:

This stunning image suggests that the work of liberation and justice is woven into the very fabric of creation.

Speaker A:

It reminds us that environmental justice work isn't separated from our social justice work.

Speaker A:

All creation longs for and participates in transformation.

Speaker A:

Here's your action step.

Speaker A:

Identify one system of oppression in your community and plan a creative non violent response.

Speaker A:

This might be organizing a prayer vigil outside of a jail or detention center, staging a diet for climate change, or creating art that exposes inequality.

Speaker A:

Remember Jesus example of peaceful yet provocative protest and consider how you might combine celebration with resistance.

Speaker A:

We're going to have a closing prayer in just a moment.

Speaker A:

They want to remind you that we have a great resource for you.

Speaker A:

Speaker A:

And help us find creative ways to challenge the the empire of our time.

Speaker A:

When those in power tell us to be quiet, give us courage to raise our voices even louder.

Speaker A:

When we're tempted to separate our spirituality from our activism, remind us that you're the God of prayer and protest.

Speaker A:

Thank you for showing us that another world is possible.

Speaker A:

One where power serves rather than dominates.

Speaker A:

Where joy becomes resistance and where even the stones cry out for justice.

Speaker A:

Help us join creation's song of liberation in the spirit of Jesus, the humble revolutionary.
